The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC), a chapter of the country’s largest organization of engineers, announced that the Posillico Wash Plant, a project designed in conjunction with Melville-based H2M architects + engineers (H2M), has been selected for a 2022 ACEC New York Diamond Award. The project is also eligible to win the Empire Award, which is given to the highest-rated project in New York State and is a finalist to represent New York State in an ACEC national competition.

The wash plant, located in Farmingdale, NY, is the world’s largest contaminated soil washing facility and the only one of its kind in the United States. 

“In recent years, there have been many high-profile incidents in which contaminated material was illegally dumped in neighborhoods across Long Island—even in a community park,” said Posillico Materials Senior Partner Michael Posillico. “This same story is playing out across the country. Clearly, the need for this facility increases every day as we focus on the need for sustainability and renewable materials, especially at a time when construction supplies dwindle to historic lows.”

Posillico Honored with C&D Recycler of the Year

Posillico Materials is being recognized for its long-time aggregate recycling operations, and for its innovative use of a wash plant to turn what are considered contaminated materials, which previously went to the landfill, into construction material end products. Posillico’s operations include:

• Five permanent concrete recycling operations that each have their own crushing systems and supply spec recycled aggregate for various markets
• Two HMA plants that use recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in their mixes as much as possible.
• A wash plant that takes in excavation waste, RUCARBS, contaminated fill, general fill, vacuum truck and dredge waste, and mixed loads, and from that turns out various end products, such as washed sand.

According to the CDRA, the addition of the wash plant shows Posillico’s willingness to take a risk to recover more materials, and the company’s R&D department is actively looking for more materials to recycle. In addition, despite taking in what is considered contaminated materials, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation works closely with Posillico and supports the company’s efforts in recycling.

Farmingdale, New York-based Posillico Inc. has invested in a new 20 tons per hour hydrovac materials washing plant for its recycling facility on Long Island in New York.

The company has commissioned a new Hydro:Tip unit to recover what equipment provider CDE calls “high-value, in-spec recycled sand and aggregates from waste muds, fluids and clays – byproducts generated from the hydro excavation process.”

Established in 1946, Posillico Inc. is a fourth-generation family business that provides a range of integrated services including heavy civil work for the public and private sectors to environmental remediation, paving, drilling and utilities contracting.

In 2019, Posillico partnered with wet processing industry supplier CDE to remove contaminants and extract value from contaminated soil that formerly had been destined for landfills. “The Posillico team understood that with the right technology this material could be processed, generating new revenue streams while simultaneously producing in-spec secondary sand and aggregate products for the construction industry in New York,” states CDE.

 Posillico Materials’ contaminated soils wash plant helps establish the company as an innovator in the U.S. 

With its commitment to environmental responsibility, Posillico Materials recognized the need in recent years to help address mounting concerns over Long Island’s ground pollution and landfill capacity.

“There’s a big need to clean up the island,” Thomas Posillico, material division manager for the company, says.

For many years, Long Island has been troubled by pollution stemming from toxic dumping and the improper handling of industrial wastes. With ground pollution having the potential to adversely affect the island’s groundwater and drinking water via three major source aquifers close to the Earth’s surface, the Posillico team identified the urgency of helping fix this problem.

Historically, contaminated soil would be transported off the island where it would be destined for landfill. A decade and a half ago, Posillico began investing in soil washing technology to help remedy this issue without having to transport the soil remotely. While this technology helped Posillico remove contaminants, extract value and return land to good use, the different vendors and equipment the company relied upon didn’t allow for the efficiencies the company hoped for.

Posillico is proud to announce its Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.67 for 2020. Posillico's stellar rating of 0.67 is 33% better that the nationwide average of 1.0 and is effective April 1, 2020.

A company's EMR determines how much they pay for workers compensation insurance and helps measure the effectiveness of safety programs in place. The EMR is calculated by comparing a company's annual losses in insurance claims against its policy premiums over a three-year period. 

On October 24, 2019, Posillico, Inc. opened the world's largest contaminated soil washing facility. The Wash Plant was created in response to the history of illegal contaminated dumping that has plagued Long Island. By taking in the contaminated soil, the Wash Plant will help prevent further illegal dumping, while also recycling the material for reuse after it has been cleaned. The Wash Plant can recycle up to 90% of the contaminated material through the washing process, while reducing the contaminates into as little as 10% of the original volume. The Wash Plant is a closed-loop system, using its onsite wastewater treatment plant to clean the contaminated water. In two months of startup, the Wash Plant processed over 60,000 tons of petroleum contaminated soil from Harbor Isle, which was cleaned to meet the NYSDEC Part 375 Unrestricted Use soil cleanup objective.

The project consisted of re mediating an 11.6-acre former petroleum storage facility that was part of the NYSDEC Brownfield program. Historic operations of the facility resulted in widespread petroleum contamination in the soil. Contamination was limited based on site conditions, which included an impermeable bog layer that stopped the vertical migration and a bulkhead to prevent the horizontal migration into the adjacent canal.

Remediation was achieved by excavating approximately 61,000 tons of grossly contaminated soil, backfilling with clean material in the replacement of approximately 1,200 linear feet of a new bulkhead. All soil that was excavated was shipped to and processed by the new Posillico Soil Wash Plant in Farmingdale, under its NYSDEC Part 360 Permit. All site work was performed under NYSDEC oversight.

Contaminated soil from this project, which is normally landfilled, was the first to be successfully treated at Posillico's Soil Wash Plant. The processed soil was reused as clean backfill and as a recycled raw material to produce asphalt pavement for projects across Nassau and Suffolk counties. The Soil Wash Plant provided a much-needed sustainable option for soil disposal in the region. Diverting contaminated soil from landfills curtails carbon emissions and reduces the need to extract virgin materials for construction projects. Treating contaminated soil requires less energy compared to obtaining and shipping raw materials, providing cost savings to companies that opt to reuse soil. Additionally, the technology utilized by the Soil Wash Plant contributes to the meeting the State's goals to reduce its impact on climate change.

Posillico announces its 6th annual "Work Safely for the Cure" Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. To raise money for the cure, pink hard hats and Posillico branded Breast Cancer Awareness baseball caps were available to employees in exchange for a donation to the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. To date, Posillico has raised over $25,000 through this campaign. Breast cancer has affected countless lives. Posillico continues this initiative each year in hopes of contributing to the search for the cure. It is conveniently located off Nicolls Rd just off LIE exit 62S and Sunrise Hwy Exit 51. These changes result in reduced net fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions.
